Johnathan Allen is a full-time professional drummer with over 25 years of experience. He’s been self-taught since the age of 8, starting out playing the drums in his local church for 13 years. After that, he was mentored by his stepfather, Sonny Akpan, the head percussionist of “The Funkees.”

Johnathan’s diverse performance background includes playing drums across the Caribbean, East Africa, Iceland, Paris, and throughout the UK, often in front of crowds of 1,000+ people. This extensive experience has taught him invaluable stagecraft and how to adapt to various situations, honing his ability to know when, what, and how to play.

Sharing his passion for music brings Johnathan true joy. He currently teaches music lessons in person at Pirate Studios across London, including locations in Earlsfield, Notting Hill, Greenwich, Croydon, Wembley, Dalston, Hackney Wick, and Camden.

ABOUT THE LESSON

Johnathan’s lessons are grounded in bespoke lesson plans that he creates for each student, based on why they decided to learn the drums in the first place.

Lessons usually start with a 5-10 minute warm-up of the entire body, mainly to loosen up the limbs and the mind from the outside world. After that, the lesson normally flows into learning and practising essential rudiments before getting into the focus points of that particular lesson.

The exact content will depend on the student’s age and level; the focus could be learning the names of different parts of the drum kit, learning a basic groove, how to play a particular song, or improving technique for more advanced players.

At the end of each lesson, you’ll unwind by stretching as you discuss the challenges of the lesson you’ve just completed and make a plan for the next one.
