East Croydon railway station

Soon to be the London Borough of Culture, Croydon is shaking off its reputation and quickly becoming a vibrant hub of creativity in South London.

If you're a crate digger, Croydon is home to DnR Vinyl. This record store is probably the UK's leading UK garage stockist (along with grime, dubstep and bassline), with thousands of classic tracks in stock as well as new music regularly finding its way onto shelves. Tune into Croydon FM - Croydon's number one for new and emerging music, broadcasting live on 97.8 FM

When it comes to food, you can't go far wrong with a trip to Croydon Boxpark and the surrounding East Croydon area for casual or quick dining. "Fat Boys" Cafe is one of the famous local spots with the "Blow Out" breakfast challenge — finish it and get your money back! For something a little more formal, South Croydon's restaurant stretch has some great options.

When you're ready to come out of the studio, Croydon has a vast range of parks and green spaces. Beddington Park, with its cafe, historic church and river running through it is locals' top pick or try Waddon Ponds.

What are apprenticeships?

An apprenticeship is a nationally-recognised, well-respected and fully-funded qualification that combines theoretical learning with practical skills whilst in employment.  Undertaking an apprenticeship allows you to earn while you learn. Most people think of apprentices as fairly junior people a company takes on and whilst this can be done, apprenticeships can also be used to upskill and develop existing members of staff in their career development.

In summary:

  • Training delivered in the workplace.
  • Nationally recognised standard in England.
  • Opportunity to develop role-relevant skills, knowledge and behaviours.
  • On average, it takes 12-18 months to complete (depending on the programme).
  • Apprentices must complete 20% off-the-job training and learning during work hours.
  • Includes Maths and English qualifications (if required).
  • Achieved on completion of a final End-point Assessment (EPA), where apprentices will be required to demonstrate the skills, knowledge and behaviours they’ve learnt to an independent assessor.
  • There are no age limits on who can do an apprenticeship and signing up for an apprenticeship will not affect a team member’s wage or promotion.

How much of my time will the program take each week?

Apprenticeship training should be delivered during the apprentices’ working hours. All apprentices must be allocated 20% of their paid working hours for “off-the-job training”.That can be spread in any way across your working week and does not need to be taken as a solid chunk. It will likely vary week to week according to the specific course you are on and what is being delivered and its method of delivery each week.

Please see the “Delivery method” section of each cohort to get a better idea of how much

What if I decide to leave halfway through the program?

Our recruitment process will be focused on ensuring that we get people who are truly committed to their course.

In the first instance, we will do everything we can to support the apprentice to remain on the program.

In exceptional circumstances, such as long-term illness or in some cases personal challenges, we can apply a ‘break in learning’ to allow the apprentice some time away from their learning.

What are the benefits to Pirate of this?

  • Grow & develop talent in your Team to build a stronger pipeline
  • Improve turnover, engagement and progression
  • Develop role-relevant skills, knowledge and behaviours
  • Improve our customer experience and your Site’s performance KPIs
  • Reward and recognise our people

What are the benefits to the Apprentice?

  • Achieve a nationally recognised qualification
  • Develop, reinforce and enhance their skills, knowledge and behaviours to maximise their potential
  • Build their confidence
  • Earn as they learn. Pirate fund their apprenticeship training.

Why are there only 10 spaces available?

Each apprenticeship costs either £5,000 or £9,000 and Pirate has managed to secure £70,000 of external funding to provision this training programme this year. We also have to ensure we have the internal resources to be able to support these apprenticeships.

If I don’t get through this time, will there be another opportunity in the future?

Potentially. This is the first time Pirate is offering something like this and if all goes well we will want to continue to offer apprenticeships.
